The history of the Barakhamba Tomb Delhi dates back to the 14th century, sitting at the eastern end of Lodi Road near the Sabz Burj. It is under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India and is right in the middle of the Nizamuddin heritage area, right by the entrance to the Nizamuddin Dargah.

Barakhamba, also known as the Barakhamba Monument, is an ancient burial site from the Lodi era. The name Barakhamba means twelve pillars in Hindi and Urdu.

A modern metro road, right in the middle of the city in Connaught Place is also named after this monument.

The Architecture of the Barakhamba Tomb in Delhi

This tomb was built for a nobleman from the Lodi period, but there are no records of his identity. It’s open on all sides and has twelve pillars, with three arches on each side and a passage around the central room, which has four domed sections at each corner.

Right next to the tomb, you’ll find the remains of Lal Mahal, another old building. It’s also known as Kushak Lal and was constructed by Balban (1266-1286), the Slave Dynasty ruler when Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah was in charge.

This building was made of red sandstone and had big chhatris that are now gone.

Subz Burj, a magnificent tomb made of blue tiles and stone, is across from the entrance to the Barakhamba. It’s called Nila Gumbad because of its blue dome.

It is believed to have been built to honor Fahim Khan; a helper to Abdul Rahim Khan during Jahangir’s time.
