Built in the 17th century, Haa Dzong has played a vital role in protecting Bhutan’s western border. Its unique architecture, with a central courtyard surrounded by traditional Bhutanese buildings, makes it a must-visit spot on your Bhutan tour packages. So, get ready to soak in some history and enjoy the breathtaking mountain views!
But wait, there’s more! Haa Dzong isn’t just about battles and borders; it’s also a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. With numerous temples and shrines tucked inside, Haa Dzong wasn’t just built to protect against Tibetan invasions; it also aimed to keep the troublesome serpent deities away.
According to legend, these mystical creatures caused problems for the people and their livestock. To protect themselves, locals believed that the dzong would help stop the evil influences of these serpent deities. It is said that there are 108 serpent deities in the area, and you can still find some of the chortens (stupas) built to please them.
Haa Dzong is smaller than some of the other grand fortresses in Bhutan, but its architecture is still very impressive. This fortress has its own charm and importance, even after a fire badly damaged it in 1913. Luckily, Gongzim Ugyen Dorje began rebuilding it the same year, ensuring that this beautiful part of history would still stand strong today.
So, when you visit, you’re not just stepping into a beautiful building; you’re walking through history, one renovation at a time!
