The Hanging Gardens is one of the most peaceful places and terraced gardens in Mumbai; it is also known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, located at the top of the Malabar Hills of Mumbai city. If you are looking for a landmark, the Hanging Gardens is opposite Kamla Nehru Park.

What’s more remarkable about this place is that these gardens provide a mesmerizing view of the Arabian Sea that helps to forget the city’s chaos for a while and creates peace within. Let’s look at the Hanging Garden’s history. We can see that this garden was designed by Mr Ulhas Ghapokar, who laid out the foundation in 1881 over the main water reservoir of Mumbai. The Hanging Garden was named Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens to honour

Adv. Pherozeshah Mehta was a famous Lawyer, social activist, and a great politician; even the people of Mumbai used to call him the “Lion of Bombay”.

According to the legends, it is said that the garden was made to save water from getting contaminated because of the activities done near the area of the Tower of Silence; it’s a funeral tower from where the Parsi community kept the dead bodies of their community as a last ritual.

However, these practices are rarely seen in India due to environmental awareness and urbanization. After a few years, the garden was renovated, and a few new structures were added to enhance the beauty of the hanging garden in the year 1920.
