About Bagalkot

Bagalkot district, officially Bagalakote, is an administrative district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The district headquarters is located in the town of Bagalakote. The district is located in northern Karnataka and borders Belgaum, Gadag, Koppal, Raichur and Bijapur.

The new Bagalakote district was carved out of Vijayapura in 1997. The bifurcated Bagalkot district consists of ten taluks — Badami, Bagalakote, Bilagi, Guledgudda, Rabkavi Banhatti, Hunagund, Ilkal, Jamakhandi and Mudhol, Teradal.

The Ghataprabha River, Malaprabha River and Krishna River flow through the district. Kudalasangama lies at the point of confluence of the rivers Krishna and Malaprabha and is famous for being the samadhi of Basavanna.

Like most districts in India, Bagalkot is headed by a Deputy Commissioner, with various Tahalsidars heading individual taluks in the district.

Bagalkot historical background was very diverse. According to stone inscriptions in the surrounding area, the town’s name was formerly Bagadige. According to legend, the town was given to the Bhajantries (musicians) by Ravana, the king of Lanka who ruled this area.

As per the history of Bagalkot, one of the Biajpur Adil Shahi king Ibrahim Adil Shah II is said to have presented the town to his daughter as bangle money (a tradition in which the daughter is given money to buy bangles, sarees, and gold ornaments from her parents after the marriage.

Bagalkot historical significance is a link with ancient civilizations, particularly renowned for its pivotal role as the capital of the Chalukya dynasty. Bagalkot ancient civilization remained under successive dominions of Vijayanagara emperors, Biajpur Adil Shahi, Peshwas, kingdom of Mysore, Maratha rulers, and finally the British in 1818. In 1865, it was established as a municipality and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot.

Bagalkot historical landmarks offer a glimpse of  the region’s rich and diverse heritage.Some of them are:
  • Aihole This spot is home to 140 temples from the Chalukyan era. This palace is located on the bank of river Malaprabha.
  • Badami Cave Temple This cave temple is located in the town of Badami in Bagalkot district and this place is considered to be excellent of Badami Chalukya Architecture. Sandstone hills were used to carve this temple.
  • Pattadakal This palace has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many temples built in this region by Vikramaditya II.
  • Kudalasangama This place is known for the samadhi of Basavanna, who was a social reformer. Basavanna was born in the 12th century and fought against caste and racial exploitation.
  • MudholThis place is famous as the birthplace of Kannada poet Kavi Chakravarti Ranna. Today Mudhol is famous for its own breed of dogs known as Mudhol hounds. The imprints of royal British and ancient Indian architecture can be observed at Mudhol. Mudhol was one of the princely states of British India.

The town is situated on NH- 367 which connects it to NH-50 and NH-52. The town is well connected via bus routes and car rentals. There are regular car and bus services available to reach the town.

By Rail

The town also has a well connected railway route. Bagalkot has direct trains to various major cities in India like Hyderabad, Mysore, Bengaluru, Mumbai etc. The train services of the town come under the south-western railway region.

By Air

The town does not have its own functioning airport but the nearest airport to the town is the Hubli airport which is at a distance of 109 km from the town and the other nearest airport is the Sambre airport which is 130 km away from the town.
