The new Bagalakote district was carved out of Vijayapura in 1997. The bifurcated Bagalkot district consists of ten taluks — Badami, Bagalakote, Bilagi, Guledgudda, Rabkavi Banhatti, Hunagund, Ilkal, Jamakhandi and Mudhol, Teradal.
The Ghataprabha River, Malaprabha River and Krishna River flow through the district. Kudalasangama lies at the point of confluence of the rivers Krishna and Malaprabha and is famous for being the samadhi of Basavanna.
Like most districts in India, Bagalkot is headed by a Deputy Commissioner, with various Tahalsidars heading individual taluks in the district.

As per the history of Bagalkot, one of the Biajpur Adil Shahi king Ibrahim Adil Shah II is said to have presented the town to his daughter as bangle money (a tradition in which the daughter is given money to buy bangles, sarees, and gold ornaments from her parents after the marriage.

The Chalukya Utsav, held every year in February, is the highlight of the city’s cultural scenario. The town is most famous for its Holi-Habba festival. Holi-Habba is the festival of colours which was initially a five day long celebration but was reduced to a three day celebration due to security reasons.
