It’s been a threat breathing in the northern part of the country now. The air quality in northern India has recently been worse after Diwali, reasons being from bursting of crackers to burning of the paddy fields, all leading to the formation of a huge amount of smog accumulated in the air making it extremely difficult to breathe here in these places. Hidden behind anti-pollution masks, people are dying for an escape now from the conditions they have to live in.

India however still has locations untouched by these hazards and still breathing clean air. So for the inmates in the country, here is a list just for you of the places in the country to run to, to save your lungs and escape the gas chambers.

Durgapur

The first place in the list is the location with the highest rank in air quality in India. This is a place in West Bengal- Durgapur. The place has an air quality Index score of 9. You could enjoy your time here visiting places like Durgapur Bhabani Pathak’s Tila, Durgapur Barrage, Durgapur Steel Plant and Deul Park etc.

Muzaffarnagar

This place ranks second in the list with a score of 31. Muzaffarnagar in a city in Uttar Pradesh that has clean air for the people to breathe onto even though it’s in the northern part of the country. There are a lot of places like Ganeshdham, Vahelna Jain temple, Bhairon ka Mandir, Akshay Vat Vatika etc.

Thane

The next location is in Maharashtra. Thane has cleaner air as well and has a score of 31. Thane is a beautiful destination to visit with places like Naneghat, Titwala Ganesh Mandir, Mahuli fort etc which are surely going to steal your heart. It has like 30 lakes including the tree-bordered Upvan Lake, a popular recreational spot. Beside Talao Pali Lake, Kopineshwar Mandir is an old majestic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiv. To the west, leopards, monkeys and parakeets live in the the teak forests and bamboo groves of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Kohima

Kohima is the capital on Nagaland. This place has clear skies right now and is going to be a bliss to your lungs as well with a score of 36.  Famous for its ethereal environment and its pristine beauty, it is a land of old stories passed down through the ages. Situated at a height of 1500 metres above the sea level, it is endowed with quaint hills, green forests and a very beautiful landscape. It is the go-to destination for all the adventure enthusiasts as it is ideal for trekking, camping and for hiking.

Pravas Patan

This is another site in the state of Gujarat which is breathing fresh air. This place has a score of 43. This place is historically named Dev Patan, and is an area situated in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat in India. Somnath temple is a place of pilgrimage due to its importance as Jyotirlinga site dedicated to the lord Shiva. Other places of interest include Junagarh Gate, Daityusudan temple, archaeological museum-Prabas Patan Museum, Triveni Sangam, Snanghat, River Balaji Temple – Brahma kund and Saraswati Devi temple, Harihar Van, Rudralay Mahadev or Rudresvara Temple Shri Krishna Nija Dham Prasthan Tirth, Baldev Gufa, Triveni Sangam Snanghat etc.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is a beautiful desert town located in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The place has a grandeur of its own with bounteous golden dunes and castles clad in golden honey sandstone. Jaisalmer is adorned with lakes, ornate Jain temples and havelis. The Jaisalmer Fort stands as a citadel and is surrounded by people residing there for generations. It has hops selling vibrant handicrafts and havelis that will make you travel back in time, Jaisalmer has a conflux of exotic Indian desert culture and adventure. The place stands in the list with the prestigious score of 53.

Kochi

Cochin is a city in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the most popular tourist destination for visitors to Kerala and is amongst the most visited tourist destinations in India. As per Kerala’s Tourism Department, the domestic tourist landing in the city was more than 23 million as of 2017. According to the department, aspects like MICE tourism, LuLu Mall, the Wonderla water theme park, and the nature of Kochi city were the main spots attracting tourists. Kochi has a brilliant AQI score of 55.

Shillong

Shillong also known as the Scotland of the East, is the capital of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya. Set amidst beautiful hill ranges and lush green forest, this place is indeed a treat to not just your eyes but your health. The fresh air and monsoon conflux here makes this a much loved location. The location is full of waterfalls of utmost beauty. The skies are all blue and the air all cool. This magnificent location gets a score of 62.

Gokarna

The last destination on the list is Gokarna, the religious, beach-town of Karnataka. Set amidst lush emerald bushes, the location is free from much pollution, with fresh sea breeze blowing in to the beaches at all times. The air here is clean and the location a steal for a holiday destination. This place manages to hold intact the charm like Goa but with a raw pristine form of it own making it yet more charming of a spot. Gokarna has a score of 64 in the index.
