It has an interesting backstory. It started on March 21, 1977, in New Delhi as part of the Anthropological Survey of India(A Study of Humankind). A year later, in 1978, it became an independent office under the Department of Culture (now the Ministry of Culture).
In March 1985, the museum got a new name, Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, by Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. In 1993, the Cabinet decided to name it after Indira Gandhi herself. Internationally, it’s now called the National Museum of Mankind.
It’s not just a place with stuff to look at, it’s a bridge that connects communities with the concept of museums. But that’s what makes the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya special. It focuses on bringing people and cultures together, making it more than just a museum—it’s a community connector!
IGRMS aims at research, training, and networking with other institutions to save and revive valuable but fading cultural traditions. They host exhibitions that tell the story of human evolution and diversity in a way that highlights both our differences and our heritage.
There’s been a big change in how museums educate people, and IGRMS is at the forefront of this transformation. They’re making museum visits more engaging and interactive, which means learning about history and culture has never been this fun!
They also act as a center of research and training in museology and help preserve a variety of cultural life by managing funds and making people aware of them.
