It has an interesting backstory. It started on March 21, 1977, in New Delhi as part of the Anthropological Survey of India(A Study of Humankind). A year later, in 1978, it became an independent office under the Department of Culture (now the Ministry of Culture).
In March 1985, the museum got a new name, Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, by Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. In 1993, the Cabinet decided to name it after Indira Gandhi herself. Internationally, it’s now called the National Museum of Mankind.
