The Manali Hidimba Temple is a shrine dedicated to Hidimba, the wife of Bheem, the second brother of the Pandavas. Hidimba was a demoness who lived in the area with her brother Hidimb. Bheem defeated Hidimb and won the hand of Hidimba for marriage. They had a son named Ghatotkacha who died fighting for the Pandavas. Hidimba ruled the kingdom after Bheem left and later went into the forest for meditation. She sat on a rock for many years doing hard penance to shed her demoness identity and was crowned with the glory of being a goddess. This is why the Hidimba Devi Temple, Himachal Pradesh, was built on this rock in 1553.
