Nako Lake: Himalayan Beauty Awaits

Ever dreamed of stumbling upon a secret paradise? We’ve got to tell you about an incredible place we’ve uncovered on our Spiti Valley adventures – Nako Lake. It’s one of those hidden treasures that makes us wonder why it isn’t on every traveler’s bucket list!

Imagine this: you’re winding through the rugged landscape of Spiti with us, and suddenly, situated on the mountains at a stunning 3,662 meters (that’s over 12,000 feet!), you come across this pristine lake. That’s Nako Lake for you, and believe us when we say it’s a welcome sight after a long, dusty drive.

Now, Nako Lake isn’t just about the views, though we can assure you they’re absolutely Instagram-worthy. The whole area around the lake is steeped in this amazing spiritual vibe. There are four ancient Tibetan temples dotted around Lake, each one looking like it’s grown right out of the rocky landscape. And get this – there are also four caves where they say Saint Padmasambhava used to meditate. Talk about a powerful spot, right?

But wait, it gets better. Our local friends tell us that Nako Lake is home to fairies. Yeah, you heard that right – fairies! We don’t know if it’s true, but standing by the peaceful waters of Lake, with the mountains reflected like a mirror, we could almost believe it. Oh, and there’s this gorgeous waterfall nearby too. It’s like Mother Nature decided to show off all her best features in one place.

Here’s a hot tip from our team: if you can, try to visit Nako Lake in September. Why? Two words: boat rides. There’s something surreal about gliding across Lake, surrounded by those peaks. It’s peaceful and beautiful at the same time if that makes sense.

We know we’re gushing, but Nako Lake is something special. It’s one of those places to visit in Spiti that reminds us why we love organizing trips in the first place. Whether you’re into photography, spirituality, or just soaking in amazing scenery, Nako Lake has got you covered.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Spiti Valley, do yourself a favor and put Nako Lake at the top of your list. It might be a bit off the beaten path, but trust us, it’s worth every bumpy mile to get there. We can’t wait to show you this magical place on your next adventure with us with our Spiti Tour Packages!

Even though Nako is a small village, there are plenty of things to do at Lake that will keep you engaged. One of the best ways to enjoy the lake is to simply walk around it. The surrounding path offers beautiful views of the water and the mountains, and it’s a great way to unwind.

If you’re into photography, Nako Lake offers plenty of opportunities for capturing stunning landscapes. The changing colors of the water as the light shifts, combined with the backdrop of the mountains, make for some amazing shots.

For those interested in history and culture, the nearby Nako Monastery is a must-visit. It’s a short walk from the lake and offers an insight into the region’s rich Buddhist traditions.

Activities

For those looking for adventure, several activities at Lake will keep you entertained. Trekking is one of the most popular activities in the region. The area surrounding Nako offers plenty of trekking routes, many of which take you to even more remote villages and monasteries. These treks are ideal for anyone wanting to explore the less-traveled parts of Himachal.

In the summer, you can also enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the lake, although this is more of a relaxed activity. For those visiting in winter, ice skating on the frozen lake is an amazing experience, but be sure to check the ice conditions before going out.

How to Reach?

It is on the Hindustan-Tibet Highway between Kaza and Reckong Peo in Kinnaur. You can reach easily by two buses that have their daily travel routine from Kinnaur to Nako and then further. While you are traveling from Manali, take the bus that leaves for Kaza from Reckong Peo and covers Nako Village on its way.

Also, you have a choice of hiring a cab for Nako village which takes up to 4 hours, but you will need a permit for that village. This allowance would cost you INR 50 if you are coming from Reckong Peop or even free if you take it from Shimla or Kaza.

But you need to keep in mind that this permit will only be valid for 14 days, so no need to hurry!

Best Time to Visit

The beauty of Nako Lake is at its peak from April to October because of the pleasant and favorable conditions of the place.

Also, the river is appropriate for boating under the bright sun. Have a great time while soaking in the sun and capturing the beauty of the place with your friends and family. Also, you should not visit Lake during the monsoon season, from August because it is the time of heavy rainfalls in the area.

Visitors would witness a frozen lake if they visit it apart from the timeline as the temperature goes down to some minus degrees which results in freezing the lake. But, you can indulge in some adventure activities like ice skating. It would be an incredible experience to have while you are in Spiti. So, why not try something new in the adventure of Nako Lake?
