The Queen of Roads’ addition to UNESCO’s World Heritage list was announced on X(formerly known as Twitter). This designation celebrates the ancient road not only as a significant historical landmark but also as a popular modern tourist destination. Its new status as a World Heritage site ensures its preservation and appreciation worldwide.
The Appian Way was a very long road, stretching over 350 miles. It was famous for being strong and lasting a long time. The Romans built it very cleverly, using special paving stones and smart designs. This showed how good the Romans were at building things, and their ideas helped people build better roads later on.Gradually, the Appian Way became very important for business and sharing ideas. It connected Rome to many other places around the Mediterranean Sea. The road was used by soldiers, traders, and regular people travelling across the Roman Empire. This made people trade and communicate with ease.
Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Cultural Minister of Italy appreciated UNESCO’s decision. He said the Queen of Roads was special because of how well it was built and how important it was for trade and sharing ideas in the past.
This recognition shows that the Queen of Roads is still important today. It would be a mark of Roman engineering excellence. He further added.
UNESCO, a part of the UN Agency has now added the Appian Way to its special list. This makes it the 60th place in Italy to get this honour. The UN agency believes that the Appian Way was very important in developing better ways to travel and also because it helped people from different places share ideas and cultures across the Mediterranean area and beyond.
