Ross Island, named after British marine surveyor Sir Daniel Ross, served as the administrative headquarters of the British during their colonial rule in the Andaman Islands.
Today, Ross and Smith islands in Andaman is a protected area and serves as a tourist attraction, with remnants of British colonial architecture, including old buildings, a church, and a cemetery, offering visitors a glimpse into the island’s historical significance.
Smith Island, located nearby, is known for its picturesque beaches and lush greenery. Visitors can enjoy water sports in Andaman islands such as swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing in its tranquil surroundings. The island is also home to a variety of bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
It was developed as a key administrative and communication center, boasting facilities such as a church, a hospital, a bakery, and various government offices.
However, the island’s importance diminished after an earthquake in 1941 and subsequent Japanese occupation during World War II, leading to the abandonment of many of its structures.
