Sirpur Lake, located on Indore-Dhar Road in Indore, covers a total area of 800 acres (around 3.6 square kilometers) and is managed by the Indore Municipal Corporation. This wetland was titled as a Ramsar site on January 7, 2022, under the Ramsar Convention. The lake was created by the Holkars of Indore State in the early 20th century.

After India gained independence and the royal families lost power, religious sites began to appear around the lake. Over time, people living nearby started to intrude in the area, and illegal activities such as fishing, poaching, cattle grazing, and waste dumping started to severely damage the lake’s ecosystem.
