Because of its significance among the people, this temple is also known as the “Kashi of the South”. The Thriunelli Temple, Wayanad is a mix of two words, including “Thri” and “ Nelli”. The word “Nelli”, stands for ‘Amla’ or the ‘Indian gooseberry’.
It is believed that the Lord Brahma, himself established the Lord Vishnu in this temple. The story begins with Lord Brahma taking a tour of the earth one fine day. During his journey, he came across Lord Vishnu who was resting under the alma tree which also became the reason behind the name of this temple.
Lord Brahma named this temple Sahyamalaka Kshetra. In return, Lord Vishnu granted him a boon: anyone who takes a dip in the river near this temple will be blessed and will be cleansed of all sins. After which the river is named “Papanasini” which literally translates into washing off all your sins.
Another story is said that Rishi Ved Vyas has mentioned this temple in Padma Puran. In the Puran, he referred to this temple as ‘Amalaka’ and ‘Sidha’. Later, Kulasekharan who was the king of Chera founded this temple. He was a big devotee to Lord Vishnu and was a creator of many devotional poems in the Sanskrit language such as Mukunda Mala.
