Trongsa, a district in Bhutan, has a long and important history:
  • Early Years: Trongsa Dzong was built in 1616 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of modern Bhutan. It was placed strategically to control central and eastern Bhutan, becoming a center of power in the 17th and 18th centuries, where influential regional governors (Penlops) helped unify the country.
  • 19th Century: In 1865, Ugyen Wangchuck, the Penlop of Trongsa, was recognized as Bhutan’s King by the British, starting the Wangchuck dynasty. Trongsa Dzong even served as the temporary capital in 1907 during political turmoil.
  • 20th Century Onwards: Declared the winter capital in 1952, the dzong was renovated in the 1960s and 1970s to meet modern administrative needs. Today, Trongsa remains a key cultural and historical site, known for its temples, monasteries, and festivals.
  • Key Events: The 1885 Battle of Trongsa strengthened Penlop’s power, the Wangchuck Dynasty began in 1865, and the 20th-century renovations blended tradition with modernity.
