Zheltoksan Monument Almaty is one of the historical landmarks in Almaty and all of Kazakhstan, popularly known as the Dawn of Freedom Monument, which stands as proof of Kazakhstan’s journey towards freedom, Independence and national identity. Zheltoksan Monument is one of the historical landmarks in Almaty and also the country’s largest  commemorating the Zheltoksan protests in the year 1986, which was a significant event in the history of Kazakhstan.

Before we move forward, let’s dig into the Zheltoksan Monument History, which dates back to December 1986 when the Soviet Union appointed Gennady Kolbin, as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, and replaced Dinmukhamed Kunaev, who has been in the position for a long time. The history of Zheltoksan Monument in Almaty is an interesting one, so if you are into history, you should definitely visit the place.

This decision sparked unrest in the country amidst the Kazakh population, which ultimately lead to the mass protests in Almaty. The protests lead to demonstrations that met various forces, resulting in casualties and plenty of arrests.

Students and the citizens of Almaty took to the streets in Almaty to voice their frustration and demanded representation of the native Kazakhs in leadership positions. These protests were later known as the Zheltoksan(which means December) Movement, and met with brutal repressions from the Soviet Forces.

As of now, the protests is seen as a catalyst for Kazakhstan’s Independence. The Zheltoksan Tany Monument in Almaty was erected in the year 2006, to honour the 20th anniversary of the protests.

Zheltoksan Monument in Almaty features two towering pylons, which is a symbol of division between oppression and freedom. These Pylons can be seen breaking apart, which symbolizes a metaphor for the disintegration of the Soviet Regime and the rise of a sovereign Kazakhstan. 

You can witness the inscriptions and artistic depictions, narrating the events of 1986, and paying tribute to the brave souls who were a part of the mass protests.

The Zheltoksan Monument is located at the Zheltoksan Monument is located at the intersection of Zheltoksan and Satpayeva Streets in central Almaty. You will find find some cafes and restaurants at the square and other monuments in Almaty.

By Car

If you are driving to Zheltoksan Monument from the Central Almaty, you fill find the monument near the intersection of Zheltoksan Street. You should be mindful of the parking because there may be limited parking near the Zheltoksan Monument. 

Public Transport

To reach Zheltoksan Monument via public transportation, you can take bus 12 or 34 from the City Center to the stop Zheltoksan. Once you deboard, walk 10 minutes along the Zheltoksan Street towards the monument. 

On Foot

If you like exploring the city on foot, and are near the landmark, walking is the best way to go around the place. From the nearest bus stop, walk to the Zheltoksan Monument, while enjoying the view of the local scenery as you make your way to the monument. This walk from the bus stop will take not more than 10 minutes.
