Before we move forward, let’s dig into the Zheltoksan Monument History, which dates back to December 1986 when the Soviet Union appointed Gennady Kolbin, as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, and replaced Dinmukhamed Kunaev, who has been in the position for a long time.

This decision sparked unrest in the country amidst the Kazakh population, which ultimately lead to the mass protests in Almaty. The protests lead to demonstrations that met various forces, resulting in casualties and plenty of arrests.

Students and the citizens of Almaty took to the streets in Almaty to voice their frustration and demanded representation of the native Kazakhs in leadership positions. These protests were later known as the Zheltoksan(which means December) Movement, and met with brutal repressions from the Soviet Forces.

As of now, the protests is seen as a catalyst for Kazakhstan’s Independence. The Zheltoksan Tany Monument in Almaty was erected in the year 2006, to honour the 20th anniversary of the protests.
