The Berlin Wall Memorial runs along both sides of the Bernauer Strasse, and the only section that has been preserved completely stands on the Berlin Wall Memorial.
The Berlin Wall stood until November 9, 1989, when the East German Communist Party’s head announced that the citizens of the German Democratic Republic could cross the border when they wanted. The crowd was so ecstatic that some crossed freely while others brought picks and hammers to bring the wall down. Even to this day, the Berlin Wall is among the enduring symbols of the Cold War.
While the Berlin Wall was brought down by the people, the local artists of the time began painting the wall and making symbols that reflected freedom from oppression.

On the other side of the street, you will find the Visitor Center and the Documentation Center, which includes an observation tower, and also features a permanent exhibition of Berlin’s division history.
A popular Monument in Berlin is the Window of Remembrance, completely dedicated to the 140 people who lost their lives at the Wall. These people were either killed, or they lost their lives due to one reason or the other and sometimes by suicide.
The Window Of Remembrance at the Berlin Wall Memorial Museum features the photographs of all those 140 people who died at the wall. You will come across blank white windows as well, which means that the picture of those victims was not present, and few have been left empty just in case more victims were identified in the future.
Out of the 140, 101 were trying to flee to West Berlin, and the rest of the thirty-one victims had no plans of fleeing, however, they were mistaken as refugees and they died accidentally. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Berlin.
Another popular Monument in Berlin is the Chapel of Reconciliation, which is prominently located at the Berlin Wall strip, and stands as a reminder of the reconciliation church. This Church was demolished shortly before the fall of the wall.
The old church was blown up, and the new one was built in the year 1894. This Chapel of Reconciliation contains rubble from its walls as well as the name of its predecessor.
