Bhutan’s Mandatory Travel Insurance Revoked For Tourists to Streamline Visa Process

In a move to make travel to Bhutan more accessible, Bhutan’s mandatory travel insurance has been abolished by the country’s Department of Tourism for tourists.

This mandate, which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, was initially designed to ensure visitors had financial coverage for medical emergencies.

However, the Department of Tourism now indicates that the global health crisis has stabilized to a point where mandatory insurance is no longer deemed necessary, signalling a shift towards more flexible and straightforward travel policies.

While the requirement for travel insurance has been lifted, Bhutanese authorities still advise visitors to consider purchasing travel insurance for their protection. The Department of Tourism highlights that while travel insurance is no longer compulsory for visa processing, it remains a sensible choice to cover unexpected events that might arise during international travel. This advisory is aimed at ensuring travellers have adequate protection in case of accidents, illnesses, or other unforeseen circumstances while visiting Bhutan.

The decision to remove the mandatory insurance requirement is part of Bhutan’s broader strategy to rejuvenate its tourism sector, which was severely affected by the pandemic. By eliminating this hurdle, Bhutan aims to make its unique landscapes, culture, and traditions more accessible to international visitors. This policy change is expected to attract more tourists, especially those from neighbouring countries like India, who value simplified travel procedures. Bhutan’s decision reflects a commitment to enhancing the tourist experience while still encouraging safety measures.

Indian citizens enjoy visa-free travel to Bhutan due to the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries. However, Indian nationals travelling by road must obtain an entry permit from the Immigration Office in Phuentsholing, which is valid for 7 days. This permit must be presented at various checkpoints within Bhutan, and those wishing to extend their stay can apply for an extension at the immigration office in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. This system allows Indian visitors to travel freely within Bhutan while complying with immigration regulations.

Bhutan offers a wide range of attractions for tourists, from the iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery in Paro to the historic dzongs such as Punakha Dzong and Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu. Visitors can also explore the gigantic Buddha Dordenma statue and experience the vibrant market scene in Thimphu. Nature enthusiasts can visit Jigme Dorji National Park, where they can trek through breathtaking Himalayan scenery, or venture to Phobjikha Valley to witness the graceful black-necked cranes.

Overall, the removal of Bhutan’s mandatory travel insurance demonstrates a deliberate effort to create a more welcoming and seamless travel experience. This move, aimed at reducing procedural complexities, is likely to attract more visitors, allowing them to explore the scenic landscapes and rich culture that Bhutan has to offer. While the requirement is no longer in place, travellers are encouraged to take appropriate precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
