History of Bibi Heybat Mosque

The Bibi Heybat Mosque has a long and interesting history. The original mosque was built in the 13th century during the time of the Shirvanshahs. It was constructed to honor a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. However, in the 1930s, the mosque was destroyed during the Soviet era, when religious buildings were often targeted as part of anti-religious policies. For many years, the mosque was nothing more than ruins, a symbol of what had been lost.

Thankfully, in 1997, the Azerbaijan government decided to rebuild the mosque to restore its former glory. Today, the Bibi Heybat Mosque stands tall once again, serving as a reminder of Azerbaijan’s deep-rooted Islamic traditions.
