The primary purpose of this fort was to defend the Portuguese territory against the Marathas; it also had an emergency escape route. After a few years, the Goa Chapora Fort was captured by the Maharaja of Sawantwadi, known to be the oldest enemy of Portuguese colonists, and he ruled only for two years. The Chapora Fort in Goa was seized by Martha rulers most of the time, especially under the reign of Chatrapati Sambhaji Raje Bhonsle, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, in 1684 and 1739.
There is an exciting story about Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in 1684. It is believed that his army climbed the wall with the help of giant monitor lizards, and impressed by his intellect, the Portuguese Governor surrendered and offered the Goa Chapora Fort without losing a drop of blood of Sambhaji’s army.
However, the fort was again captured by the Portuguese in 1741 till 1892 and they left Goa in 1961 and passed to India. However, due to many battles, the fort is in ruins today. Even though it is in ruins, the Chapora Fort in Goa is known for its historical battles and is the best location for panoramic sea views. It is one of the best spots for heritage and nature enthusiasts.

At the top of the Goa Chapora fort, you will observe the main gate, which is smaller and narrow in shape. There is an irregularly shaped bastion according to the defence requirements. The bastions are the angular-shaped structures positioned in a fort to place the armoury, such as Canons, Guns and Stones for defence purposes, and the bastion has a turret that gives a unique structure to the fort.
Inside a fort was a church dedicated to St. Anthony, which has now disappeared, and only a few barracks were left, which was used to accommodate the military personnel. The fort bears an open space and stones, some bushes of cashews, and because of the rocky valley, the fort becomes the best place to observe the sea landscape.
Whether you are a photographer, heritage lover or a typical tourist who loves to observe the sunset, the Chapora Fort of Goa has everything for everyone, and it stands as a testament to Goa’s rich history and cultural heritage. Even if it is still in ruins, it is one of the popular tourist destinations attracting tourists from every corner of the world. So whenever you plan to visit Goa, especially North Goa, remember the route to Chapora Fort.

“I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

“In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
