My grandmother used to tell me stories about Dagshai – the kind of stories you don’t hear in textbooks.

Every time we visited Himachal, as we passed through the winding roads near Dagshai, she’d lean closer and say, “This is Mary’s town.”I remember asking once, “Who’s Mary?” Grandma smiled, but there was something in her eyes – like she wasn’t sure if she should tell me. “She was a soldier’s wife… and some say she never left.” At the time, I thought it was just another ghost story meant to keep kids from wandering too far.

But as I grew older, the stories didn’t fade – they grew louder. I became curious. The more I learned about the town’s history, the more I wanted to know – about Mary, about the soldiers, and about why Dagshai always felt different from the other hill stations. So one summer, I decided to see it for myself.

If we go back in time, Dagshai wasn’t always the peaceful hill station it is today. The Mughal rulers used to send criminals here for punishment—yikes, right? The place earned the name “Daag-e-Shahi,” meaning “royal stain.” Over time, this name became “Dagshai,” and when the British took over, it turned into an army cantonment. But the real spooky stuff started during British rule.

The Legend of Major George Weston and His Wife, Mary

blog-images
The British cantonment, with its army buildings, homes, and a lonely cemetery, is where things got really mysterious. The most famous Dagshai, the haunted town in Himachal story is about Major George Weston, a British doctor, and his wife, Mary, who worked as a nurse. The couple struggled for years to have a baby, but finally, with the help of a blessed amulet from a wandering saint, they got pregnant. Sadly, Mary died eight months into her pregnancy.

In his heartbreak, Major Weston built her a beautiful grave with marble shipped all the way from England. This grave was not just a resting place; it became the center of some crazy myths.

Mary’s Grave: Is It Really Magic?

Rumor has it that Mary’s grave had special powers. It was said to bless pregnant women with the chance of having a boy if they visited and took a piece of marble from the grave. Well, as you can imagine, people started visiting in droves, and before long, the grave was in pieces. What was once a beautiful tribute to Mary turned into a damaged, almost unrecognizable mess.

But the legend doesn’t stop there. Some people say they’ve seen Mary’s ghost roaming the cemetery, trying to protect her grave from the damage. Whether you believe it or not, the Dagshai town Himachal horror story still gets told to this day, and it’s one of the creepiest parts of the town’s past.
