The Salt March was a 24-day-long non-violent protest led by Mahatma Gandhi which started on 12 March 1930 to 6 April 1930. It is famously known as Dandi Satyagraha which was the largest campaign against British policies on Salt Tax. The salt producers in India were not allowed to trade the salt independently in the nation, instead, they were bought by the Britishers at a lower price and sold to the Indians again at a higher price. This imported salt was heavily taxed by the Britishers, this affected the poor people of the nation.
To revolt against the unfair Salt Taxes imposed by the Britishers, Mahatma Gandhi set out on foot from the Sabarmati Ashram in Surat towards Dandi Beach on the western coast of Gujarat which covers a distance of approximately 385 km.
Upon reaching Dandi Beach he was joined by thousands of people already he picked up a handful of salt along the shore, thus technically “producing” salt and breaking the law and proving that leaders are not just leaders they are heroes without capes.
