History of Druk White Lotus School

In the 1990s, the Druk White Lotus School, also known as the Druk Padma Karpo School, was established to meet the educational needs of children living in an isolated area in Ladakh, India The objective was to develop a common foundation that would combine modern with integrated learning with preservation of Ladakhi culture and traditions.

Construction of the school began in 1998 under the leadership of renowned construction firm Arup Associates. The design philosophy focused on sustainability and adaptation to Ladakh’s harsh climate.

Buildings were built using local materials such as rammed clay, stone, and wood, and incorporated passive solar heating systems to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round.

Thus this innovative approach earned the school several prestigious awards, including the 2002 World Architecture Award for Best Beautiful Building and Best Education Building.
