There are numerous stories about Chandi temple in Mahasamund region, one of the legendary stories is about the incarnation of Chandi Devi in Birkoni. In earlier days, the whole Mahasamund district was suffering from Cholera, and on some or other days, people were dying due to cholera, and people were so afraid.
After a few days, the villagers got the news that a daughter and a mother died due to cholera, and two villagers were ordered to do the last rituals while taking the corpse at night.
They stayed for a while at night, and suddenly the lady was awake in a Goddess Avatar and stated she intentionally came in her body and told the villagers to build a temple; on the second day, the whole story was narrated; however, people were laughing at them and then she came in another villager’s dream and told the truth.
After this incident, the temple was built, and after worship, the cholera pandemic was gone; there are other stories, such as converting the thieves into stone, that you can still witness on the temple’s premises. The temple is located in a hilly region, and it’s a major pilgrimage site, especially during the festival of Navratri, where devotees take a strenuous trek to Khallari Mata Temple to seek the blessings of Khallari Mata. Another legend says that there is a cave in this temple where Kali mata come once a year to drink the blood of sacrificed life, and no one is allowed to enter the cave except the Priest of the temple.
