Tandula Dam: Things To Know Before Visiting Century-Old Dam

Tandula Dam was built by the Britishers in 1921 and is 5 km from Balod in Balod district in Chhattisgarh. It provides water to Durg and Bhilai Nagar and also caters to the industry requirements of the Bhilai Steel Plant.

The gross storage capacity of the dam is 312.25 million cubic meters and the highest flood level is 333.415 m. Tandula Dam is built on the rivers Tandula and Sukha. 

Tandula Dam also helps in flood control by mitigating the risk of flood during heavy monsoons. Boating rides at Tandula Dam Chhattisgarh are also famous among tourists. A waterpark is also under construction near the Dam.

Built in the year 1921 the British Raj Tandula Dam in Chhattisgarh marked the history of development in the state. The history of Tandula Dam states that this dam would become highly important to the locals in central India. 

Being the third largest reservoir in Chhattisgarh Tandula Dam was constructed under British engineers in two phases. Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) was set up looking at the location of the Tandula Dam. 

While construction Britishers would have never imagined that Tandula Dam would be the landmark for setting up one of Asia’s biggest steel plants. The construction work of BSP started in 1955.
