The History of Kuromon Market

The market’s origins date back to the Edo period. The market was initially a fish market for trading fresh seafood from Osaka Bay. Over time, more shopkeepers came selling vegetables, meat, and other local products, gradually changing it into one of the major markets in Osaka for fresh food sales.

The name “Kuromon” is translated as “Black Gate” in Japanese. It originated from a large black gate that once existed near the market, marking the entrance to a temple. The gate no longer exists, but the market carries its historical name.

Today, Kuromon Ichiba Market has over 150 stalls selling a mix of foodstuffs. Contrasting other simple supermarkets, this provides an experience whereby a buyer will smell and taste before leaving the shop fresh produce.
