What is Makaravilakku, and Why is it Special?

blog-images

Every mid-January, the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in Kerala hosts the Makaravilakku Mahotsavam, a sacred celebration that draws thousands of devoted pilgrims.

The festival falls on the first day of the Makara month in the Malayalam calendar, coinciding with Makar Sankranti, when the sun begins its northward journey.

"Makara" means Capricorn, while "Vilakku" means light. On this special day, devotees gather to witness two divine sights. First, they see the Makara Jyothi, a bright star that appears in the eastern sky.

Shortly after, a sacred flame called Makara Vilakku glows three times from the distant Ponnambalamedu hills, traditionally lit by the local Malayaraya community.

The festival also features the Thiruvabharanam procession, where Lord Ayyappa's golden ornaments are ceremoniously carried from the Pandalam palace to the Sabarimala temple, symbolizing divine approval.

Many believe that witnessing these divine flames purifies their mind, fulfills their wishes, and completes their spiritual pilgrimage. It's a deeply moving experience that devotees cherish forever.

41-Day Preparation for Makara Jyothi Darshan

blog-images

Attending the Sabarimala Makaravilakku requires deep spiritual commitment. Pilgrims must complete a rigorous 41-day purification period called Mandala Kalam, starting from the Malayalam month of Vrichikam.

This disciplined routine cleanses the body and mind, preparing devotees to receive Lord Ayyappa's divine grace.

  • The Sacred Irumudi Bundle

Every pilgrim carries an Irumudi, a two-compartment cloth bag. The front holds offerings for Lord Ayyappa: coconut with ghee, rice, and sacred items. The back holds personal essentials. This bundle is offered at Sannidhanam.

  • The Barefoot Trek:

From Pampa, devotees walk barefoot through forests and hills to Sabarimala; no vehicles allowed. Before the final climb, they visit Pampa Ganapathi Temple for blessings.

  • Completing the Journey:

The vrat ends only after witnessing the divine Makara Vilakku and offering prayers to Lord Ayyappa. Many also visit Guruvayur Krishna Temple, while some stay for the full seven-day festival ending with Kuruthi Puja.

Divine Offerings After Makara Vilakku

After the Makara Vilakku festival ends, devotees receive sacred prasadam as blessings from Lord Ayyappan. The temple distributes two special offerings that pilgrims treasure.

1. Aravana Payasam: The first is Aravana Payasam, a delicious sweet made from jaggery, rice, and ghee. Devotees believe this sacred dish grants protection, fulfills wishes, and carries the divine energy of Lord Ayyappan.

2. Appam: The second offering is Appam, soft, sweet treats prepared and blessed at the temple. These are later given to devotees as prasadam, symbolizing spiritual nourishment from the deity.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
