Welcome to Mayong Village, known as the “Black Magic Capital of India.” Here, you might find yourself cured of a serious illness or end up in a worse situation, depending on the magic at play. How can such extreme shifts in fortune occur? In this village, people are said to have strange powers—they can control natural forces, heal the sick, or even cause harm. Curious about how it all works? Let’s dive into the mysterious world of magical Mayong Village — The Capital of Black Magic. It’s one of the must-see places to visit in Assam.
In the 19th century, Mayong Village came under British colonial rule. The British attempted to suppress the local traditions and beliefs, but the villagers managed to preserve much of their cultural heritage.
The origins of the Mayong Village black magic are unclear. Some say it comes from old tribal rituals, while others think it was influenced by outsiders. It’s believed that certain families in the village have secret knowledge and spells passed down through generations, giving Mayong its mysterious reputation.
There are even stories that Mayong is mentioned in the Mahabharata, with some believing that Ghatotkacha got his powers here. Another famous tale is about Muhammad Shah, whose entire army disappeared in the forests around 1330. Despite searches, no trace of the one lakh soldiers has ever been found.

Historian Mirza Mohammad Qasim wrote in the Alamgiri Nama that during the conflict between the Mughals and the Ahom kingdom, the Mughal leader Ram Singh was more afraid of the black magic from Mayong Village than the Ahom army.
Today, the magical Mayong is a thriving village with a diverse population. While the people who practice black magic may be fading from the village, the belief in it remains strong.
While the village’s reputation for black magic persists, it has also become a popular tourist destination for curious travellers, history buffs, adventure enthusiasts, and those fascinated by black magic.

The locals of Mayong are believed to possess powerful spells that are still effective today. What’s even scarier is that if someone shares their problems with a tantrik (a black magic practitioner), the Tantrik might solve the problem in a horrifying way—by ending the person’s life instead of just resolving the issue. They believe this is the only way to achieve complete redemption. Spooky, isn’t it?
Black magic is no joke! I thought it was all just a myth until I heard the most terrifying story of all. The Beera Cult involves summoning a powerful spirit by highly trained Tantriks only in dire emergencies. If the spells are done wrong, though, instead of the Beera spirit, horrible and malevolent spirits might appear. Just hearing about this kept me awake all night!
These are just a handful of the countless chilling stories I’ve come across—there are said to be thousands of such tales. However, many people now believe that these frightening practices no longer take place, and visiting the village for a stay is considered completely safe.

Despite the controversies surrounding black magic practices, the village’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical significance attract visitors from all over the world.
