In 1459, Rao Jodha initiated the construction of Mehrangarh Fort. He selected a hill, known as Bhakurcheeria (“mountain of birds”), as the site for his new capital, and decided to relocate from Mandore Fort.

According to local lore, a hermit named Cheeria Nathji used to live on this hill. Rao Jodha requested Karni Mata, a saint, to ask Cheeria Nathji to vacate the premises. Upon Karni Mata’s request, Cheeria Nathji left the place but cursed that the kingdom would never flourish.

Followed by Cheeria Nathji’s exit, Karni Mata laid the foundation stone of Mehrangarh Fort.

Legend also says that Rao Jodha buried a man named Raja Ram Meghwal to weaken the curse on the fort. Back then, people thought this would bring good luck. Raja Ram Meghwal voluntarily agreed to do this and Rao Jodha promised to take care of his family.

About 100 years later, another ruler named Rao Maldeo made the fort stronger by improving its gates and walls.  After this, the fort changed hands between the Rathores and the Mughals for several years.

In the 18th century, Maharaja Ajit Singh took control of the fort and restored it. He built new rooms in the fort and added a special gate called Fateh Pol to celebrate victory.

In the 20th century, the royal family moved to a new, and modern palace called Umaid Bhawan. After that, Mehrangarh Fort was mostly empty for a long time.

Today, Maharaja Gaj Singh II is in charge of the fort. He turned it into a museum and opened it for visitors to explore and learn about its history.
