After they died in 1912 and 1914 respectively, the Japanese people expressed their desire to commemorate their legacy. The result was the creation of Meiji Jingu, constructed with generous public donations. The forest surrounding the shrine is a labor of love, with over 100,000 trees sent from across Japan and even overseas. Today, this man-made forest has matured into a thriving, peaceful retreat.
During World War II, the shrine was tragically destroyed. However, it was rebuilt in 1958 through the efforts of the Japanese people, showcasing their dedication to preserving this cultural treasure.
