Any individuals displaying symptoms of monkeypox will be immediately isolated for further medical examination. According to recent reports, the Indian capital of Delhi has identified three major hospitals Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Medical College as the primary facilities for handling monkeypox (Mpox) cases. State Governments have also instructed to designate similar hospitals within their regions and stress public awareness.
P.K. Mishra, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister in a high-level meeting, emphasised educating healthcare providers on recognizing the signs and symptoms of monkeypox. This would help in the timely reporting of any suspected cases and enable the effective management of the disease.
Mpox has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO), as it is widely spread especially in some parts of Africa.
While global Mpox cases are rising, Indian officials have assessed the risk and the transmission within the country is low. However, to strengthen India’s testing capabilities and prepare for any potential Mpox outbreak in India, the Health Ministry has equipped 32 laboratories across the country to test for Mpox. This network ensures early diagnosis and treatment of any detected cases. The ministry has stressed the need to maintain this laboratory infrastructure to handle the situation effectively.
