This grand structure is a powerful symbol of authority, heritage, and civic pride. As visitors pass through its imposing arches, they are greeted with a sense of reverence and awe, making the gate a physical threshold and a gateway to the core of governance and public service. So when you make your India trip, and head to the capital of India, be sure to check out this revered location.
At Rajpath’s western end, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president of India’s official residence, is partially accessible to the public through guided tours. It is flanked by the North Secretariat and South Secretariat, mirror-image buildings with domes, housing government ministries that are not open to the public. Nearby, the Indian parliament convenes at Sansad Bhavan, a circular, colonnaded structure at the end of Sansad Marg, which is also not open to the public.
At the eastern end of Rajpath stands the imposing India Gate, a 42-meter-high stone memorial arch designed by Lutyens. It honors approximately 90,000 Indian Army soldiers who perished in WWI, the Northwest Frontier operations, and the 1919 Anglo-Afghan War.
