Saheliyon Ki Bari, or the Garden of Maidens, holds a rich historical significance as a symbol of love. It was constructed between 1710 and 1734 by Maharana Sangram Singh, specifically designed as a peaceful haven for his queen and her forty-eight maids, who accompanied her to Udaipur at her wish.

It is believed that the king himself designed the garden, presenting it as a gift to his queen to provide her and her maids with a peaceful escape from the political schemes of the court. The garden’s detailed layout features carved marble pavilions, lotus ponds, pool shelters, and rain fountains, offering a perfect spot for relaxation.

As much as the garden was a private escape for the queen and her companions, it was also a peaceful place for the king and queen to enjoy nature together. The beautiful atmosphere here brings joy and calm, making Saheliyon Ki Bari history an everlasting symbol of love and peace.

The architecture of Saheliyon Ki Bari Udaipur is a beautiful blend of Indian craftsmanship and European elements that showcases the skill and creativity of Rajput artisans and preserves its historical charm to this day.

Covering around six acres, the garden has four different water pools, each with its own theme and design:

  • The main pool, Sawan Bhado, has four marble pavilions at the corners with bird figures that spout water, creating a rain-like effect.
  • Kamal Talai, or the Lotus Pool, features a marble lotus-shaped fountain surrounded by elephant statues that spray water from their trunks, creating a captivating sight.
  • Maharana Singh further enhanced the garden’s beauty by adding a special pavilion with a showering fountain that was brought from England. It was designed to depict the image of maidens dancing in the rain. This pavilion, known as Bin Badal Barsaat, creates an artificial rain shower, adding to the garden’s charm.
  • Rang Mahal, another pool, features colorful glass windows that cast vibrant hues across the water, and a marble chhatri, or canopy, to enhance its beauty. The central bathing area is also decorated with a beautiful fountain, making the atmosphere more delightful.

Saheliyon Ki Bari also has a museum displaying royal artifacts, a rose garden with various floral species, a birdhouse with different bird species, and a nursery that sells plants and saplings. Precisely carved marble pavilions, rich green lawns, flowerbeds, and bougainvillaeas further beautify the garden, and create a scenery that is picture-worthy!
