Planning a trip to Ladakh and looking for a place that feels a bit like Gulmarg? Sankoo Village might just be the hidden gem you need! Sitting in a bowl-shaped valley at about 9,524 ft, it's surrounded by green views and fed by the Suru River. It’s not the place where crowds rush in — and that’s exactly why people love it.

Sankoo is a quiet little town just 42 km south of Kargil, and honestly, it feels like a hidden pocket of peace in Ladakh. Locals fondly call it “Ladakh’s own Gulmarg,” and once you get there, you’ll see why. It’s one of the greenest and most lively valleys around, which is rare in a land mostly known for rocky mountains and dry terrain.

There’s a small bazaar and a bunch of villages around, giving it a cozy, lived-in feel. If you're on a bike trip to Ladakh, this quiet little stop is perfect for a laid-back escape. It’s not touristy yet, which just adds to its charm.

The best time to visit Sankoo Ladakh is from May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the valley is lush and green, and the roads are open. It’s ideal for sightseeing, biking, and soaking in those peaceful mountain vibes. Winters can be harsh and snowy, so unless you’re up for a real adventure, it’s best to avoid the colder months.

So, you’ve got Sankoo on your bucket list (good choice!), and now you're wondering how to get there? Don’t worry—we’ve got you.

1. By Air

Your closest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh—around 220 km from Sankoo. Once you land, you can grab a taxi or hop into a shared cab to Kargil (about 5–6 hours). From Kargil, it’s just another 1.5-hour scenic ride to Sankoo.

2. By Road

  • Leh to Sankoo: Roughly 220 km and takes about 7–8 hours. Just follow the Leh-Srinagar Highway (NH1), pass Mulbekh and Namika La Pass, and then head into Suru Valley.
  • Srinagar to Sankoo: About 200 km, taking 6–7 hours. You’ll drive through Sonamarg, cross Zoji La Pass and Dras, and reach Kargil—then it’s just a short 40 km drive to Sankoo.

3. Public Transport

  • Buses: JKSRTC buses run regularly between Leh–Kargil and Srinagar–Kargil.
  • Shared Taxis: Budget-friendly and a local favorite—these run between Leh, Kargil, Dras, and Sankoo.

I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
