Shri Nartiang Durga Temple History

The Shri Nartiang Durga Temple’s history is fascinating because it combines ancient legends with stories of kings supporting it and religious traditions being practiced there. The Shri Nartiang Durga Temple is estimated to be around 600 years old, built in the 14th or 15th century.

The temple is revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, holy sites within Shaktism for devotees of the Goddess Sati. According to legend, these sites mark where the body parts of Sati fell after Lord Shiva carried her corpse. In Nartiang, it’s believed the left thigh of Sati landed.

According to local beliefs, King Dhan Manik of the Jaintia Kingdom established the temple after a dream where Goddess Durga instructed him to build it. Historically, the temple practiced animal sacrifice, mainly goats, but this ended during British rule.

Today, the temple remains a significant pilgrimage site, especially during Durga Puja, attracting devotees from across India, making it one of the best places to visit in Jowai.
