History of Soundararajaperumal Temple in Nagapattinam

The Odambokki, a distributary of the Kaveri River also known as Virutha Kaveri, flows near the Soundararajaperumal Temple, contributing to the deity’s alternate name, “Kaveri Thuraivan.”

Historically, Nagapattinam was a forest called Sundararinyam. During the Treta Yuga, the prince Dhruva performed penance in this forest to see Vishnu, who appeared to him in response.

Similarly, Sage Markandeya achieved a vision of Vishnu during the Satya Yuga, and King Saleesa Chola experienced the divine presence of Vishnu and Lakshmi during the Kali Yuga.

The temple tank, Sara Pushkarani, is also believed to have restored physical health to two eunuchs, Kandan and Sukandan, after their holy dip. According to tradition, Brahma, the god of creation, began worshiping Vishnu at this site.

Here Vishnu manifested on Masi Maham day, earning the name “Aḻagiyan” for his radiant appearance. Referred to as “Soundara Rajan” for his beauty, Vishnu’s consort is known as Soundaravalli.

The name Nagapattinam, meaning “place of Nagas,” reflects the legend that the snake king Adisesha worshipped Vishnu here.
