If you think Meghalaya has shown you all its magic, wait till you hear about Wari Chora. Tucked away in the quiet corners of the South Garo Hills, this peaceful spot often slips past even the most detailed Meghalaya tour packages. It is one of those places that locals cherish, far from the usual crowd and noise.

What makes Wari Chora special is the peaceful river that flows between tall cliffs and thick greenery on both sides. The journey begins with a walk through forest paths and continues with a canoe ride on calm, crystal clear water. It feels less like a tourist spot and that is exactly the charm.

If you love nature, silence, and discovering places your friends have never heard of, Wari Chora might just become your favorite part of the trip. So let’s dive into how you can tick it off your travel list!

Best Time to Visit Wari Chora

blog-images

The best time to visit Wari Chora is during the winter and early spring months, from November to March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, the river is calmer, and the skies are clearer, perfect for boating and enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

Why avoid the monsoon?

Heavy rains from June to September can make the area difficult to access, and boating activities may be suspended due to rising water levels and strong currents. Even the trails leading to Wari Chora can become slippery and risky.

Wari Chora Location: 9GCV+QV, Agalgre, Meghalaya 794114

Reaching Wari Chora is an adventure in itself. It involves a combination of long drives, off-roading, and a short trek, but the destination is absolutely worth the effort.

Step 1: Reach Guwahati or Shillong

  • By Air: The nearest major airport is in Guwahati, which has good connectivity with major Indian cities. Shillong’s Umroi Airport is closer but has limited flight options.
  • By Train: You can also take a train to Guwahati Railway Station if you prefer rail travel.

Step 2: Travel to South Garo Hills

  • From Guwahati or Shillong, begin your road journey to Tura, Baghmara, or Siju, these are towns in the South Garo Hills region.
  • You can travel by private cab, shared taxi (often called "sumo"), or buses.
  • The journey can take around 7 to 9 hours, depending on your starting point and the road conditions.

Step 3: Local Transfer to Emangre or Trek Point

  • From Tura or Siju, hire a local 4x4 vehicle to take you closer to Wari Chora, usually via villages like Emangre or Dabalgre.
  • The roads are rugged and unpaved, so off-road vehicles are essential.
  • This stretch covers around 15 km and takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Step 4: Short Trek to Wari Chora

  • From the final drop-off point, you’ll need to trek for about 30 to 45 minutes through bamboo forests and steep paths.
  • The descent can be quite steep in parts, so wearing trekking shoes is highly recommended.
  • Hiring a local guide is advisable, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain.

Step 5: Explore the Canyon

  • At the base, you’ll find yourself in a magical canyon with turquoise water.
  • Local guides usually provide kayaks or wooden rafts to explore the narrow, peaceful water channel surrounded by towering cliffs.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
