In a very tragic turn of events, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner Air India Plane crashed on Thursday, 12th June, in the afternoon, killing 274 people, 241 onboard, including the passengers and crew members, and 33 on the ground. Vijay Rupani, former Chief Minister of Gujarat, was also among the deceased.
The flight was heading towards London; however, shortly after takeoff, this Air India flight crashed and plunged into the Meghani area of the city, crashing into a Medical hostel where students were having lunch. Upon the crash, there were massive fumes of black smoke which could be seen from far beyond, triggering an emergency response.
The aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder. According to reports, the aircraft was heavily fueled for the long-haul flight, which contributed to the intensity of the explosion and the subsequent fire.
Air India Tragedy At the Residential Quarters
The death toll that has been confirmed is 241 passengers and crew members. 33 victims were present at the BJ Medical College campus(Air India Crash site), who were possibly doctors, students, staff, and other people from the Meghaninagar Area.
As per the witnesses, the plane lost altitude soon after takeoff, crashing into the residential building. Emergency aid and rescue services were sent to the Ahmedabad plane crash site.
Survivor Of the Air India Crash
When your time hasn’t come, not even a fatal plane crash can kill you. Proving this statement true, there was one survivor of the plane crash. Ramesh Viswashkumar, a British citizen seated on 11A, escaped death by jumping out of the plane, right after it crashed, and came out with minor injuries.
According to the sources, there were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese Nationals and one Canadian National onboard, out of which only one survived.
What Caused The Air India Plane Crash?
The Tata Group said in an official statement that it would provide 1 crore as compensation to the family of the victims who died in the crash.
Chandrasekaran(Air India Chairman) stated, “With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India flight AI 171 operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by the devastating event. At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted.”
Airport Operations Partially Resumed
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has resumed operations with a limited number of flights. Passengers are being requested to check with the airlines for more information on their flights.
