In a very horrifying incident, a plane crashed in Toronto injuring 18 people onboard. The Delta plane crash in Toronto occurred at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The aircraft, a Delta Air Lines flight travelling from Minneapolis, ended up upside down on the runway after crashing. Authorities reported that at least 18 people sustained injuries, but thankfully, there were no fatalities.
One of the passengers described the terrifying moments after the crash, saying they were left hanging inside the plane “like bats.” The plane’s final position, flipped over on the runway, made evacuation challenging, but rescue teams responded quickly to help the passengers and crew exit safely.
Aviation experts say that improvements in aircraft design and seat safety played a major role in preventing the Delta plane crash in Toronto from becoming a much bigger tragedy. Despite the severity of the crash, 80 people survived, a fact that highlights the effectiveness of modern aviation safety measures.
David Soucie, a CNN safety analyst and former Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety inspector, emphasized how critical these advancements were. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong, yet 80 people survived the accident,” he said. “That tells us how much aviation safety has improved over the years.”
Experts have compared this incident to a tragic 1987 crash in Denver, where a DC-9 aircraft flipped over in a similar way. That accident resulted in 28 fatalities, highlighting how much aviation safety has improved since then.
Soucie pointed out that one of the biggest differences between the Toronto plane crash and past accidents is the way modern aircraft are designed to break apart in a controlled manner. In the Denver crash, the wings stayed attached to the fuselage, causing additional destruction.
However, in the Delta Flight 4819 crash, the wings detached as intended. “That’s actually a good thing,” Soucie explained. “You don’t want the wings to stay attached and tear the fuselage apart. Instead, you want them to break away so the aircraft can slow down safely. That design feature saved a lot of lives in this accident.”
