Where Aves Island is located adds to its beauty. It lies in the North and Middle Andaman region, close to the town of Mayabunder. The island is about 242 kilometers from Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Surrounded by dense forests and calm waters, Aves Island feels like a world of its own.

Best Time to Visit Aves Island

The best time to visit Aves Island is between November and April. With an average temperature that ranges from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius, the weather, in general, of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be said that Aves Island has a hot and humid season during March, April, and May. It experiences a rainfall season from June to approximately about 4 months in the year. The general kind of rain usually ranges between moderate to heavy rains, at degrees of intensity that may vary at different times.

Finally, the winters range with a temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius between October to February. According to this, tourists can visit at any season as would be suitable. However, travelers generally avoid visiting the island in the rainy season because many tourist attractions remain inaccessible due to rain. How to Reach Aves Island

Here’s a detailed guide on how to reach Aves Island:

1. Traveling to Port Blair:

  • By Air: Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is served by Veer Savarkar International Airport. Regular flights connect Port Blair with major Indian cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam.
  • By Sea: For those preferring sea travel, passenger ships operate from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair. The voyage typically spans 3 to 4 days, offering a unique maritime experience.

2. Journey from Port Blair to Mayabunder:

  • By Road: Mayabunder is approximately 242 kilometers north of Port Blair. Government and private buses ply the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), passing through Baratang and Rangat. The journey, lasting about 9 to 10 hours, traverses dense forests and includes ferry crossings. Buses usually depart early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, reaching Mayabunder by late afternoon. On an ATR, it is possible to come across the Jarawa tribe. Still, it is prohibited to click their pictures, communicate with them, or give them any item, as it is essential to respect their privacy and is a punishable offense if the rule is violated.
  • By Ferry: Inter-island ferries operate between Port Blair and Mayabunder. While less frequent than road transport, they offer a scenic maritime route. Schedules can vary, so it’s advisable to check the latest timings in advance.

3. Reaching Aves Island from Mayabunder:

  • By Boat: From the Mayabunder jetty, Aves Island is a short 20-minute boat ride away. Local boats, often referred to as “dinghies,” can be hired for this purpose. It’s essential to obtain the necessary permissions from local authorities before commencing on this trip, as Aves Island is uninhabited and may have access restrictions.

Important Considerations:

  • Permissions: Given that Aves Island is uninhabited, visitors may need to secure special permissions from the forest department or local authorities for a day visit. It’s recommended to consult with local tour operators or authorities in Mayabunder for guidance.
  • Travel Planning: Due to the remote location and limited transportation options, it’s advisable to plan your journey meticulously. Confirm ferry and bus schedules in advance, and consider potential weather-related disruptions, especially during the monsoon season.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
