Built-in the year of 1979, the Banasura Sagar Dam Kerala supports the Kakkayam Hydroelectric Power Project. The main objective of this dam is to provide hydroelectricity and irrigation to the region. This dam was opened to the common public in 1992 which means it took around 13 years to complete this major attraction. Standing strong from the year of 1979, this dam is nothing less than a Nature as well as Engeriing marvel. This dam was built using large piles of stones and boulders which is a part of earthen dam technology, making it fascinating but at the same time an achievement for the engineers. 

With a height of 38.5 meters and 776 meters long, this dam is India’s largest and Asia’s second-largest earthen dam. Built on the River Karamanathodu which is a tributary of the Kabini River. The reservoir of clean water of this dam can be used for irrigation as well as drinking water during summer, making it part of the Kuttiyadi Augmentation Scheme.

  • How to Reach Banasura Sagar Dam: The nearest bus stop is Padinjarathara, which is 3km away from the dam. Or you can hire a taxi or a cab that will drop you at the entrance of the dam. Once you reach Wayanad, which is just 20 km away from the dam.
