In the early hours of Friday morning, the Delhi airport roof collapsed! The Delhi Airport Terminal 1 roof collapsed due to the heavy rainfall which caused significant damage to the parked vehicles, including taxis. Unfortunately, three lives were lost, and six others were injured in the incident. Emergency responders acted quickly by providing immediate medical aid to those who were affected.

The incident at Terminal 1’s old Departure area led to the decision to suspend all departures and closing of all check-in counters till 2 p.m. that time, as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, Terminals 2 and 3 continued as usual with flights arriving and departing on time without any disruption.

Following the Delhi Airport Terminal 1 roof collapse, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has started inspecting all terminal structures to ensure they are safe and strong. Maintenance teams are securing the affected area to prevent any similar incidents, and updates are regularly given to passengers and airport staff. DIAL has also increased the number of emergency personnel and medical teams at the airport to handle any emergencies on time.

Terminal 1, which is mainly used for domestic flights by airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet, remains closed indefinitely after the incident. Engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi are assessing the structural damage, and a detailed technical evaluation is expected to be completed within a month.

Now, IndiGo and SpiceJet have moved their domestic operations to the more crowded Terminals 2 and 3, which typically handle about 1400 flights across all terminals. It is regrettably affecting the airport’s daily flight operations.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has emphasized the need for safety and a detailed evaluation before considering the reopening of Terminal 1. While it suggests potential delays of several months, the airport authorities are focused on keeping operations smooth despite the closure of Terminal 1 and also on helping affected businesses and concessionaires.

The ongoing heavy rainfall in Delhi and the National Capital Region has worsened travel conditions, causing widespread waterlogging and road disruptions. Although the authorities are working hard to reduce these problems and get things back to normal in the affected areas as soon as possible, the passengers are sincerely advised to stay informed about flight schedules, to keep checking with airlines for updates, and to arrive early due to current weather challenges.

I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
