Want to see a beautiful garden on your Rajasthan Tour? Head to Gulab Bagh. Gulab Bagh and Zoo Udaipur is a beautiful place with plants and wildlife. Gulab Bagh also called Udaipur Zoo, covers 100 acres of land. If you love nature, you should visit this place. It is the largest garden in Udaipur and has many interesting things to see. 

It is named Gulab Bagh as there is an incredible rose collection of various species. Inside the garden, there is a very pretty pond with lotus flowers. This is also home to many medicinal plants and rare animal species. Also, don’t miss to explore the museum that tells stories about the royal family. 

Architecture Of Gulab Bagh And Zoo 

Gulab Bagh and Zoo Udaipur is an old city-level park with green spaces, ponds, a library, a zoo, temples, and some government offices. There are 4 gates to the park, but only 2 are open for visitors. 

The parking space can accommodate approximately 350 motorcycles and 50 cars. Around the park, there is a tall wall that is between 3 to 5 metres high. This wall is made of concrete, stone, and brick giving the architecture of Gulab Bagh and Zoo a special charm.

History Of Gulab Bagh

Gulab Bagh is a special garden in Udaipur, India, built in 1881 during the rule of Maharaja Sajjan Singh. Also known as Sajjan Niwas Garden, it is home to one of the oldest zoos in the region and many medicinal plants. 

The garden is important for Indian medicine and tells the story of the Mewar dynasty. Visitors can explore its history and see a wide variety of plants used for healing.

Gulab Bagh Garden used to have another name Badabagh! Mainly because it is very big. However, the name was forgotten with time. 

Inside the garden, there is a place called the Victoria Museum. This museum has a special library named Saraswati Bhawan Library, built by Maharana Sajjan Singh. It is the 1st library in Rajasthan and is a place full of books and knowledge that people can visit and learn from.

Also, the museum has many old and special things to see. It has very old stone writings from the 3rd century. Before India became independent, there was a statue of Queen Victoria near the museum. But in 1947, when India became free from British rule,  a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed. 

Plants And Wildlife At Gulab Bagh

Gulab Bagh has many different kinds of trees and plants. You can see fruit trees like mango, guava, and banana. There are also special trees like tamarind and jackfruit. The garden has many other plants, like jasmine flowers.

Gulab Bagh is home to some rare animal species like Black Leopards, Ostriches, Zebras, Hoolock Gibbons, and Rhinos to name a few.

Top Things To Do at Gulab Bagh And Zoo

  • Explore the Zoo in the garden with different animals.
  • Visit Navlakha Mahal, a religious place for Arya Samaj, located in the centre of Gulab Bagh. 
  • Enjoy a toy train ride that starts at Luv Kush station.
  • Relax at Kamal Talai, an artificial lake.
  • Visit Saraswati Library
  • Explore the museum that has a famous collection from the royal family and various books related to history, archeology, Indology, etc.

Best Time To Visit Gulab Bagh And Zoo

If you want to visit Gulab Bagh in Udaipur, the best time to go is from September to March. During these months, the weather is usually nicer and more comfortable for walking around the garden and zoo.

Gulab Bagh Ticket Prices 

Gulab Bagh is open every day from 8 AM to 6 PM.

Gulab Bagh Ticket Prices for:

  • Garden:  25 rupees for each person
  • Zoo:  5 rupees for each person

If you want to take pictures in the zoo, you need to pay 15 rupees extra for your camera.

So, if you want to see both the garden and the zoo, and take pictures, it will cost you 45 rupees in total.

Location Of Gulab Bagh And Zoo

Gulab Bagh is a fun place to visit in Udaipur. You can find it on Bapu Bazar Road, near Sajjan Niwas Bagh. The garden is big and stretches from the Suraj Pole to the Udia Pole. Around the zoo, there are some neighborhoods like Nayio ki Talai, Choti Brahmpuri, Kalaji Goraji, and Mograwadi. 

The main street that goes around Gulab Bagh is called Gulab Bagh Road. This street makes it easy for people to find and visit the garden.
