Agnigarh Hill, one of the top Tezpur offbeat attractions is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. According to Hindu Mythology, the story of this fortress is that it was surrounded by fire at all times so that nobody could go in or out of the fort without permission. Usha ( daughter of Banasura) fell in love with Aniruddha ( grandson of Lord Krishna).  

Banasura however, did not approve of the match and imprisoned Aniruddha in another place and kept his daughter Usha in isolation in this place which had a boundary of fire, which no one could cross without the permission of Banasura, and thus, it was called, Agnigarh or the fort of fire. The name itself is derived from the words ‘Agni’ (meaning fire) and ‘Garh’ (meaning fortress or wall) in Sanskrit.

The current structure of this temple was built by Nag Baba while later it was developed by Mahadeo Bharati and his devotees. The original temple was destroyed in the 1897 earthquake and the present temple was constructed in the early period of 20th century.

According to history, the original Mahabhairab Temple was built by the Asura King, Banasura out of stone. The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva built with a Living Stone that slowly grows with age and is one of the world’s largest Shiva Lingams.

The park was built in 1906 by a British commissioner of Assam named Mr. Cole and was later reconstructed by M.G.V.K Bhanu in 1996. Later Park was renamed as Chitralekha Udayan, after the famous mythological character Chitralekha who was known for her painting skills.
