The festival showcases the martial, spiritual, and cultural significance of Sikhism by demonstrating their physical strength and skills.

The word “Hola” means charge or attack, while “Mohalla” means organised procession, which together means display of collective power and unity. The festival features thousands of Nihang Sikhs demonstrating Gatka (Sikh martial art), mock battles, horse riding, sword fighting and archery.

Apart from the martial performances, Hola Mohalla also includes Nagar Kirtans, recitation of Gurbani, and langers where free meals are provided to all.

1.Martial Art (Gatka) Demonstration:

One of the most powerful ways to celebrate Hola Mohalla is martial arts demonstrations, especially Gatka, which shows Sikhs' martial preparedness. Envisioned by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1701, Hola Mohalla was a way for Nihang Sikhs to rehearse for defence.

Gatka is performed using real authentic weapons such as sticks, swords, spears and shields. Some of the other demonstrations include tent pegging, horsemanship feats, riding two horses simultaneously, mounted swordplay and dangerous balance demonstrations.

2.Grand Nihang Singh Processions:

The grand Nihang Sikh processions are one of the most historically rooted parts of Hola Mohalla celebration. You will witness Nihang Sikhs dressed in blue attire moving through streets and open grounds in Anandpur Sahib.

The participants carry traditional arms such as talwars, spears, and shields, ride horses, and perform feats of valor. Along the way, you will also see Gatka demonstrations, mounted maneuvers, and weapon drills in real time.

3.Kirtan And Spiritual Gathering:

Kirtan and spiritual gatherings are one of the best ways to combine martial displays with spiritual devotion. Throughout the Hola Mohalla celebration, you will see continuous Gurbani Kirtan being performed at various gurudwaras in Anandpur Sahib, primarily in Takht Sri KesHgarh Sahib, the birthplace of the Khalsa.

Your ears will be blessed by ragis singing verses from the holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji that emphasize moral discipline and truthful living.

4.Langar:

One of the most integral parts of the Hola Mohalla celebration is Langar, demonstrating Sikh principles of equality, service, and responsibility. You will witness roadside tents and Gurdwaras serving Langar, free meals to millions of pilgrims, volunteers, and visitors, throughout the celebrations.

5.Colorful Atmosphere and Cultural Festivities:

A powerful and traditional alternative to Holi, Hola Mohalla offers visual richness through grand processions and martial art demonstrations. You will see Nihang Sikhs dressed in blue with real weapons, decorated horses, and flags.
