Nirmala Sitharaman’s Major Tourism Announcements 2026
The Union Budget 2026 unveiled several key measures on Sunday to boost India's domestic tourism sector.
Infrastructure and Training
Union Budget 2026 has announced the establishment of a National Institute of Hospitality, which will upgrade the existing National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT). This aims to improve training standards in the hospitality industry.
A pilot program will also be launched to upskill 10,000 tourist guides across 20 locations through a standardized 12-week training course. This will ensure better quality experiences for visitors.
Alongside, an announcement for developing 15 archeological sites into cultural destinations has also been made. These include Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur, and Leh Palace.
Buddhist Circuit Development
Furthermore, the Finance Minister also proposed a plan to develop the Northeast Buddhist Circuit under the Buddhist Circuit Development Scheme. This Buddhist circuit India initiative covers Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
The plan includes preservation, connectivity, and the support of pilgrim amenities across the region—tapping into both domestic and international interest in spiritual tourism.
Digital Mapping of Destinations
One interesting digital initiative announced is the National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid. This will create a digital record of India's cultural, spiritual, and heritage sites. This effort will make it easier for travelers, planners, and tour operators to discover, plan, and promote tourism venues—from heritage sites to lesser-known local attractions.
Nature and Wildlife Tourism
The 2026 budget for domestic tourism puts a lot of focus on nature-based tourism. The Finance Minister announced plans to develop ecologically sustainable trekking and hiking trails in the Himalayas, Ghats, and other scenic regions. These include mountain trails in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir, as well as in the Araku Valley (Eastern Ghats) and Pothigai Malai (Western Ghats).
The Budget also includes the creation of turtle trails along key nesting areas in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala, and bird-watching trails around places such as Pulicat Lake. This approach links conservation with tourism, encouraging eco-friendly travel experiences.
Transport and Connectivity Improvements
Improved connectivity plays a key role in making domestic travel easier and faster. Budget 2026 proposes seven new high-speed rail corridors that will link major cities, reducing travel time for both business and leisure tourists. These corridors complement existing networks and aim to make long-distance travel more efficient and comfortable.
In addition, the government plans to develop national waterways and seaplane operations as alternate travel options. The Seaplane Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme will support water-based travel modes that connect popular destinations that are currently hard to reach.
What Travelers Can Expect from Budget 2026 Domestic Tourism Announcements:
- Faster and more comfortable journeys
- Better-informed tour guides
- Enhanced cultural experiences
- Easier access to offbeat destinations.
- Families planning trips to hill stations, wildlife parks, heritage sites, or eco-trails may find richer options and support services in the years ahead.
- Digital initiatives like the National Destination Knowledge Grid should also make travel planning simpler and more informed.
