The Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yuru Monastery, was founded in the 11th century by Mahasiddha Naropa. It is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh, with a rich history intertwined with the development of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. The monastery was initially established as a Bon monastery, but it later became a prominent center for the Drikung Kagyu and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
