The history of Lamayuru Monastery Ladakh dates back over a thousand years, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. It is said to have been founded in the 11th century by Naropa, a famous Indian scholar and Buddhist yogi. According to legend, the site was once a lake, and Naropa is believed to have blessed the area, causing the lake to dry up and make way for the monastery.

Originally built as a temple dedicated to the Tibetan Buddhist teachings of the Kagyu sect, Lamayuru later became a part of the Drikung Kagyu school. Over time, it transitioned to the Gelugpa sect, which it follows today. The monastery complex once housed over 400 monks and played a significant role in spreading Buddhism in the region. Its rich history, combined with the striking “Moonland” terrain, makes Lamayuru a fascinating place for history buffs and spiritual seekers alike.
