The word Moopun in Moopun Waterfall comes from the Stone Bridge that connect both sides of the Umjhai River, just above the waterfall. The word “Moo” means stone and “Pun” means connect.

Moopun Waterfalls is a stunning spot along the Umjhai River in the East Jaintia Hills, making it one of the best places to visit in Meghalaya. Just 10 km from NH 44 at Kongong and 25 km from both Jowai and Khliehriat, Moopun is easy to reach. From the PWD road, it’s a short 300-meter walk to the top of this beautiful waterfall in Meghalaya, and just a 5-minute stroll from parking to the base, with only 3 more minutes to reach the unique Stone Bridge.

The Moopun waterfalls in Meghalaya falls from a height of 110 feet and spreads 50 feet wide, dropping into crystal-clear waters on the sandy beach below before continuing peacefully to the Myntdu River. One special feature of Moopun Falls is the rare pitcher plants, similar to those found at Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake, that grow beautifully among the rocks.

Visitors can reach Moopun Falls on a smooth road from NH 44 that passes through the villages of Pynthorsale and Mukhaialong. This scenic waterfall along the Umjhai River is a perfect spot for relaxing, exploring, and creating lasting memories in the natural beauty of the East Jaintia Hills.

According to legend, Moopun Falls is connected to the beautiful Umhang Lake, located in Bataw village about 30 km from the district headquarters. It is said that the Water Goddess, known as “Kyllang Le Iaw,” travels from Umhang Lake all the way to Moopun Falls. 

When she arrives, she bathes in the waterfall’s cool waters and rests there for three days and three nights. After her time at Moopun Falls, she continues her journey onward. This story adds a magical touch to the already breathtaking scenery, making Moopun Falls even more special to visit.
