This historic gem was built in 1860 by Sikander Jehan Begum, daughter of Qudusiya Begum who built the famous Gohar Mahal of Bhopal. Sikander Begum lived a life making her own path, she ended slavery and supported women’s progress in the city.
Sikander Begum was not just progressive but also quite the braveheart. She often dressed like a man and used to roam without any guards or soldiers, setting a bold example for women in Bhopal. For the people of Bhopal, the Moti Masjid is like a reminder of her fearless and forward-thinking spirit.

The mosque’s structure reflects the architectural traditions of that era. The design is predominantly Islamic, with sandstone used. The main prayer hall, crafted from white marble, features a beautifully decorated archway.
You’ll find two ablution tanks on either side of the gate, each with a marble fountain. These tanks are used for the ceremonial washing before prayers, a significant tradition in Islam. The central prayer hall is a true gem, almost like a real pearl. The entire mosque is built on a raised platform, with the prayer hall elevated even higher. Overall, the Moti Masjid masterfully combines excellent architectural techniques with decorative details.
Firstly, it’s a religious place so dress accordingly, covering your head, arms, and legs. Remember to remove your shoes before entering the mosque.
Be respectful by keeping your voice low and behaving calmly. Ask if photography is allowed, as rules may vary.

“I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

“In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.

“After an amazing trip to Tirthan with WanderOn, I decided to go to Manali-Jispa with them and yet again, the experience was worth every penny. The place was very beautiful and the quality of service was top-notch, the itinerary was very good and the quality of transportation and stays were very good. Had an awesome time there and made some good friends as well. Lastly, our trip captains Priyasha and Rachit managed the entire trip very well and were so fun and made our trip an experience worth remembering.
