Indian airlines face a major regulatory shift as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced a set of new passenger-centric flight rules in India on March 18, 2026. The new rules include mandating 60% free-of-cost seat selection on all flights, transparent baggage policies, and enforceable passenger rights.
The reasoning is quite simple. India is now the world's third-largest domestic aviation market, and with lakhs of passengers flying daily, minor inconveniences affect them. These new regulations directly address long-standing complaints from travelers.
60% Seats Without Selection Fees—The Biggest Change
Under the DGCA's new air travel rules, airlines must ensure that at least 60% of seats are available without seat selection charges.
Families Stay Together—Same Booking, Same Row
Families and groups travelling on the same booking will also be seated together, ending the frustrating experience of being split across different rows on the same flight.
Clearer Rules for Baggage & Booking
Traveling with sports equipment, a musical instrument, or a pet? Under the new airline ticket booking rules in India, airlines must now publish clear policies for all of these—upfront, before a passenger completes their booking. What was buried in fine print is now required to be stated clearly.
Passenger Rights Get Stronger
Flight delayed? Boarding denied? The DGCA's new air travel rules now demand strict enforcement of passenger rights in all such situations. Airlines must display these rights visibly on their websites, apps, booking platforms, and at airport counters. For the first time, this information must also be available in regional languages, making it accessible to travelers across the country.
