Good news for people planning their travel to the Northeast! North Sikkim reopens for tourists effective March 9, 2026. Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake are once again available through the Mangan district administration and Tourism Department.
Earlier, the region was closed to tourists following the catastrophic South Lhonak Lake glacial outburst in October 2023. The flood destroyed critical roads and bridges across North Sikkim, cutting off access to the area for nearly nine months.
After extensive restoration work, infrastructure has been sufficiently repaired to allow safe travel once again. This includes the road to Gurudongmar Lake, one of India's highest-altitude lakes at 17,800 feet, which is now accessible to visitors.
North Sikkim Travel Update 2026 - Connectivity Restored
The 2023 South Lhonak Lake glacial outburst flood did more than damage roads; it effectively shut North Sikkim off from the rest of the country. The flood caused bridges to collapse and severed key routes to Lachen. Cyclone Remal in 2024 and repeated cloudbursts through 2025 added pressure to an infrastructure still recovering.
Rebuilding took months of sustained effort from the BRO (Border Roads Organization). The most significant milestone came on February 26, 2026, when a 400-foot Bailey suspension bridge over Taram Chu was inaugurated, alongside the restored Chungthang–Lachen road. The BRO cleared ninety-six landslides, built four new bridges, and carved a fresh road through severely damaged terrain.
The reopening of North Sikkim tourist places, including Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen, and Lachung Yumthang Valley, has given travelers access to the region's most sought-after destinations once again.

North Sikkim Tourist Places Now Accessible
- Lachen: Sitting at over 9,000 feet along the Lachen Chu River, this quiet Himalayan village serves as the base for Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. Known for its monastery, mountain views, and warm Lachenpa hospitality, Lachen is where most travelers spend the night before heading higher.
- Gurudongmar Lake: At 17,800 feet, this lake is one of the highest lakes in the world, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs alike.
- Lachung & Yumthang Valley: Lachung Yumthang Valley is particularly significant for spring travelers. Known as Sikkim's Valley of Flowers, the valley bursts into color between late February and mid-June with over 24 species of rhododendrons in full bloom.
- Zero Point (Yumesamdong): Located at around 15,000 feet, Zero Point is the last motorable destination in North Sikkim—snow-covered for much of the year and surrounded by raw, uninhabited Himalayan terrain.
- Thangu Valley & Chopta Valley: Both valleys sit close to Lachen and tend to draw travelers who prefer quieter terrain. At high altitude and largely off the main tourist trail, they are worth factoring in for anyone with an extra day and an interest in untouched Himalayan landscape.
