Big news for Maharashtra! Panchgani is currently hosting the Paragliding World Cup 2026. This is the first time Panchgani has ever welcomed the official World Cup championship.
The event, jointly organized by the Directorate of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, and local partner High Fly Paragliding, kicked off on February 14, with over 100 of the world's best paragliding pilots from more than 25 countries.
Before Panchgani, Bir, Asia's highest paragliding site, has hosted international-level paragliding festivals. Now, the spotlight shifts to this scenic hill town in the Satara district.
Having successfully staged warm-up events in both 2024 and 2025, Panchgani is not a newcomer to the international paragliding circuit. However, this year marks a significant shift. This year, Panchgani is hosting the main global championship, which has traditionally taken place in leading European destinations.
Panchgani offers winter flying conditions that rival some of Europe’s best paragliding destinations. Its unique terrain, consistent wind patterns, and stable weather make it a world-class flying site.

Perfect Flying Conditions
Panchgani sits at 4,000 feet in the Western Ghats with special winter flying conditions that even Europe can't offer. While most paragliding spots struggle in winter, Panchgani has clear skies, steady winds, and perfect temperatures.
Unique Flight Pattern
In most places, you launch high and land low. Simple gravity.
But in Panchgani? You take off and actually go up another 2,000 feet using warm air currents, then land back where you started.
Proven & Safe
With over 20,000 safe flights and solid infrastructure, Panchgani showed it was ready for the big stage. That's why the World Cup came here, adding another milestone to the best Pragliding places in India.
Cross Country Paragliding in Panchgani
The Panchgani competition is all about cross-country paragliding, basically the marathon version of flying.
How it works:
- Pilots fly 80-140 km daily (not just up and down)
- They use rising warm air (thermals) to stay up for hours
- Navigate through valleys and cover maximum distance
- Get scored on distance, speed, and smart flying
Regular paragliding is a quick flight. Cross-country is a multi-hour journey across the landscape.
Why Panchgani works:
- Strong air currents keep pilots up longer
- Open terrain with clear paths
- Safe landing zones everywhere
- Natural "air highways" through valleys
Paragliding in Western Ghats 2026
Panchgani's location in the Western Ghats mountain range is a big reason it's perfect for this event.
What the Western Ghats offer:
- Big elevation changes for launching
- Steady winds from the Arabian Sea
- Green valleys and amazing views
- Stable winter weather
- Natural warm air rising from valleys
At the Paragliding World Cup, India is putting the Western Ghats on the global adventure map. While Himachal has Himalayan paragliding, the Western Ghats offer something different: warmer weather, unique winds, and new challenges.
If PWC Panchgani 2026 goes well, the Western Ghats could host international events regularly
